Experience the Thrill of an F1 Race in Another Country

My love for Formula 1 started when I took our son Zac who is now 26 to his first race in Melbourne.  He was a five-year-old car obsessed child who I thought would enjoy a Friday at the track watching the F1 cars going around in circles practicing for the race ahead.  I’m a lover of all sport but knew nothing about Formula 1 so thought Friday would be less crowded and we could enjoy the atmosphere.  We sat on Brocky’s Hill in front of a screen and by the end of the day the commentary and interviews being televised around the track left me wanting more.  I learnt about the cars, the teams their strategies and the drivers. What followed has been obession staying up late Sunday nights watching F1 races around the world.   Zac and I have only missed one year of the Australian Grand Prix since then, and it took Covid, and the race being cancelled for that to happen.

Attending a race in another country was swiftly added to the bucket list, and the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix was an obvious choice. It has been popular with many Aussie motorsport fans since its inclusion on the Formula 1 calendar in 2008. The city’s Marina Bay circuit winds through tight, twisting corners, testing the limits of both driver skill and car performance.  The family was taking a 4-week trip around Vietnam and Cambodia – read more about that trip here, so we incorporated a stopover in Singapore to take in the experience of an F1 weekend in another country.

Before we left, I entered and won a competition to have our tickets upgraded which included seats in the Fan Zone and a pitlane walk on the Thursday night.  It was surreal being so close to the cars with only a black strip of tape standing between us and the garages where it all happens, which up until now, we had only seen from our TV screens.  Our seats were opposite where the cars entered pitlane, so we were looking up the track, the last cars on the grid just in front of us.  At the conclusion of the race, I got a perfect picture of Mark Webber sitting on Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari getting a lift back to pitlane because his engine failed on the last lap.

The thrill of being at the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix was an electrifying experience that combined the roar of high-performance engines, the energy of the crowd, and the stunning backdrop of Singapore’s skyline. As the sun sets and the floodlights come on, the night race transforms into a spectacle of speed, lights, and color.

In the spirit of making the most of this bucket list experience, at the conclusion of the race we made our way onto the track with the rest of the crowd to watch the winners receive their trophies and spray champagne in celebration. Sebastian Vettel took pole position for Red Bull, with Nico Rosberg joining him on the front row. Vettel easily won the race by a large distance ahead of Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen.

Spectators are treated to an immersive experience, whether they are in the stands or walking around the circuit, enjoying the food, music, and entertainment in between races. The combination of high-speed action, breathtaking views, and the contagious energy of the fans creates a sense of excitement that stays with you long after the race ends. For motorsport enthusiasts and first-time visitors alike, the Singapore Grand Prix is a captivating blend of competition, culture, and unforgettable moments.

The atmosphere of a Grand Prix under lights was one-of-a-kind, and it’s a memory I’ve treasured every year since, reliving the thrill of the Singapore Grand Prix from the comfort of my couch. It was an unforgettable experience, ranked high on my bucket list, and one I highly recommend every motorsport enthusiast to experience for themselves!
