“Some places you visit to see. Others you visit to feel.”

ANZAC Cove is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave.

During my travels through Turkey, I found myself standing on the edge of the Aegean Sea, at the very place where history—and humanity—collided over a century ago. ANZAC Cove, nestled along the rugged coastline of the Gallipoli Peninsula, is one of the most moving places I’ve ever been.

🧭 Getting There

Getting to Gallipoli takes a bit of planning, but it’s worth every minute. You can catch a bus from Istanbul to Eceabat (a small town near the battlefields), then join a guided day tour of the Gallipoli sites. You can also rent a car and explore at your own pace. If like me you choose to take a guided tour of Turkey make sure Gallipoli is on the itinerary.

The entire region is peaceful, dotted with olive trees and views of the sea, but the energy shifts as soon as you approach ANZAC Cove. You feel it in your chest—like you’ve stepped into something sacred.

🌊 First Impressions

The shoreline is surprisingly small. Waves lap gently against the rocks. The cliffs rise just behind the beach—steep, almost unscalable, and yet this is where the ANZAC troops landed on April 25, 1915.

Looking out at the same waters they faced, it’s impossible not to imagine what they saw: the fear, the courage, the chaos. It’s quiet now, but the echoes are there if you pause long enough to listen.

What struck me most wasn’t just the sorrow—but the serenity. There are no flashing screens or tourist crowds. Just open sky, rippling waves, and the weight of memory. Walking through the cemeteries, I read the gravestones—names, ages, messages from mothers who never got to say goodbye. Many were barely 18. I didn’t know them, but I mourned them. I thanked them.

Nearby, a plaque features the famous words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, which I stood in front of for a long time: “Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives… You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.”

🔍 Why You Should Go

As Australians we have a strong connection to the Gallipoli Campaign. While a military failure, the bravery, resourcefulness, and camaraderie displayed by Australian soldiers, especially during the landing on April 25, 1915, continue to be celebrated as defining characteristics of the Australian spirit. To be there is to feel the power of Gallipoli. ANZAC Cove is about more than war—it’s about remembrance, reconciliation, and resilience.

If you’re someone who loves travel with meaning, who values quiet moments and the stories that live in the land, Gallipoli will move you.

✈️ Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit: April is ideal, especially if you want to attend ANZAC Day commemorations. Otherwise, spring and autumn are perfect weather-wise.

What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes, water, sunscreen, and a respectful heart.

Tour or Solo: Being on a group tour provided the historical insight, but solo travel here would be deeply personal and reflective too.

Nearby Spots: Don’t miss Lone Pine, Chunuk Bair, and the Turkish memorials—each tells a different part of the story.

🧳 Final Thoughts

I didn’t expect to be so affected. I went to ANZAC Cove curious, and I left changed. If you’re planning a trip through Turkey, make room for Gallipoli. It’s not just a stop on the itinerary—it’s a chapter in your own journey.

Sometimes, the most unforgettable places aren’t the loudest or the most Instagrammed. Sometimes, they’re quiet little coves where the past still breathes, and your heart learns something new.
